Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
